I went to High School with some of these guys. Mark (the blonde singer) was a genius in my art class. We(alumni) make a trek down to San Diego to the Belly Up at least once a year to relive our youth and party down with some of the most talented musicians you never heard of:Venice and their alter ego Pine Mountain Logs. They have tons of stuff on YouTube and thier site Venice Central. Some dirt on the band. Mark was once rumored to date Cher (we was a singer in her stage band) . And Kippie (the dark haired singer) was once a heart throb in Tiger Beat. These guys are almost all related to the famous Lennon Sisters. David Crosby has heralded these guys as the best harmonic band in the business today.

Anyone that grew up in the 80’s in Socal has some sort of affinity for Van Halen of none other than Pasadena. There are old backyard party tapes that if you search long enough you will find of a rough David Lee Roth workin’ out for his future fame.

My cousin Brian Geller headlines a band called Fan Halen and was invited on stage not too long ago with none other than Sammy Hagar. They  have played several House Of Blues venues as well as festivals in Texas and Arizona.

When Inflating Prices Makes Sense

Sony has banned  retailer discounts on some products.(NRF Smart Brief/ The New York Times/Bits blog (11/20)

The company hopes that  the move, which applies to high-priced products such as its Alpha digital cameras and high-end televisions, appeals to busy shoppers by eliminating the need to search for deals among retailers. The moratorium on discounts follows a Supreme Court decision last year to loosen antitrust regulations that prevented manufacturers from dictating retail prices.

This is interesting to me. Initially, one might say they are crazy in this environment to not lower prices. But by making it easier to purchase by stripping away comparison shopping they may actually increase volume sales. Time will tell if this is brilliant or not.

Is Social Media Even Media?

The Eisenbergs consider if we should even call it media.

I kind of agree. Is Twitter really media? Doesn’t media kind of imply  some sort of tighter organization?

Most striking in the linked article is this quote from Ted McConnellof P&G:

We hijack their own conversations, their own thoughts and feelings, and try to monetize it.”…“You can do really amazing things. But I’m not so sure I want to be targeted like that. … I don’t think everything every consumer says to someone else and writes down is somehow monetizable by the media industry.”

Interesting. I have often felt at times (although wrongly so), that the only conversations were commercial in nature.
